In a LWPro article (I think it was Mojo's) someone detailed a particular scene where a Narn cruiser was blown up. The fireball in that scene was an actual film clip (I think from Pyromania) that was mapped to a transparent polygon. The animator was careful not to move the camera too much to spoil the illusion of what was essentially a "projected" image of fire. You can get away with a lot with a good image map. _________________________________________________________________ Walter (Jay) Turberville |wturber@primenet.com wturber@aol.com Phoenix, AZ |http://www.primenet.com/~wturber ...........................|ftp.primenet.com/users/w/wturber From wturber@primenet.com Sat Jul 15 10:46:35 PDT 1995 Article: 7754 of comp.graphics.packages.lightwave Xref: netcom.com comp.graphics.packages.lightwave:7754 Path: netcom.com!noc.netcom.net!ix.netcom.com!howland.reston.ans.net!news.sprintlink.net!news.primenet.com!ip010.phx.primenet.com!wturber From: wturber@primenet.com (Walter J. Use the right mouse button to create each point individually. Note that the left mouse button possitions crosshairs that make judging your cursor location easier but do not actually creat points. Select points individually or in groups and fine-tune the location of your points ("t" is the keyboard shortcut for Modify/Move). Once you have the points where you want them, unselect all points and then re-select them in order (this is not strictly necessary if you are sure you created your points "in order". By in-order, I mean around the perimeter of your object as though you were tracing its outline - either clockwise or counter-clockwise is fine. Oh! BTW "w" will bring up the point statistics [if you have Points selected at the bottom] menu which is faster than using the menus and may be faster than de-selecting the points using the mouse.) Press "p" (keyboard for Polygon/Create) and ya got yer polygon. Extrude away. You can load a background image if you have one that makes point placement easier and more accurate. Once you get your part made, sit down and read the Modeler manual. Everything is not in it, but it will help. Take it with you. Read it on a bus. Is it still in good shape? If so, then there's yer problem. Stranahan and some others make excellent tapes. They are faster than reading the incomplete manuals and contain more info on things like how to work efficiently etc. They cost more $$ though. If you want to learn fast, I'd spend the $$. Of course you can always ask here, but I prefer to think of this group as more of an expertise pool than a training ground. That is only my view - others may see it differently. Also, you don't generally get a fast response on the weekends. One from, Eliot Jacobsen, was merely a rehash of the FAQ he posted in various newsgroups. The other one from Jarrod Phillips (jphillips@viewpoint.com) was a bit on the nasty side. When I suggested that we might come up with an alternative site (or sites) as a repository, Mr. Phillips commented "By jumping on the bandwagon of negativity without a clue about Viewpoint's intentions, you advertise your ignorance." I didn't jump on any bandwagon, I posted my comments before most of the many other negative posts started hitting the NewsGroups. And I DID have some idea of Viewpoint's intentions...it was already announced by Viewpoint that they would not allow any more mirroring of Avalon by FTP sites., and that they were going to drop FTP support altogether, in favor of exclusive access through their WWW page, with all its advertising. I also expressed fears about Viewpoint's insistance that Syndesis stop marketing their Avalon CD ROM. I predicted that Viewpoint would then want to market their own version of it. And I was right on with that one, they plan to have one available for sale at Siiggraph. Jarrod Phillips had something to say about that too...."John Foust's CD was not an altruistic venture distributing PD data. (It costs a lot less than $30/CD to take a tape to a service bureau and get a CD pressed.)" That's right Mr. Phillips, it certainly does ! Which leads me to a very important issue...What does Viewpoint intend to charge for THEIR CD ? I think it stands to reason, that their volume in this area will be greater than that of Syndesis, they already pass out locked CD's of the data sets that they sell, so they are already have the capability to produce their own inhouse, or even if they have gone another route with that, then they already have a relationship with an outside service bureau, producing those CD's for them. I therefore feel that I am being fair when I suggest that they can produce a CD cheaper than Mr. Foust at Syndesis can. What costs will they have incurred, other than pressing the CD's ? Probably not much. Sure, they are going to "pretty everything up a little by making thumbnail sample renderings of the models, and maybe spruce up the descriptions a bit, but that is all window dressing and their costs for that should be minimal. To sum up my concerns regarding the CD then, What price WILL Viewpoint charge ? I suggest that $5, or $10 tops would be appropriate under the cicumstances. Let's face it, the lion's share of the work was already done for them. I am also concerned that we will have the CD filled up with a lot of advertising. Wouldn't it be clever of them to set up the CD with a nice GUI interface which would require us to view all their advertising in order to get to the models. I hope they don't do that. I am also concerned that because of the widespread ill will they have earned for themselves, that they will offer an initial pressing of the CD at a low price at Siggraph as a gesture, and then jack the price up several notches when things "cool down" and they have gotten a few more meshes from us. Well Viepoint, no need to send me any more nasty E-mail. If my fears have no basis, PROVE IT ! I am sure that 3D people everywhere are going to be watching you very closely. You have, by your own admission, already made too many mistakes in handling Avalon. The only time I get a Win32s error is when loading a scene file created on an Amiga and not correcting the path names of the objects. Other than that, its been really stable. What is really odd is that LW is about the only thing stable on my system right now. Everything else is crashing. Well, looks like Escom just pounded the last nail in the coffin... It will be DIE HARD Amiga users that that will snatch up the machine. Unfortunately, there aren't that many these days. There will be even less once the news of a $3500 040 amiga gets to them. I love the amiga, but you can buy a Mac 9500 for that price. It has more RAM, more hard drive space, more expandability, PCI (cheaper expansion) and I won't even begin to hint at how much faster it is! (Okay, maybe I will... UN-FUCKING BELIEVEABLE!!) I fail to see how it can be justified in today's business world to spend $3500 for a system that is virtualy un-useable without a couple of thousand MORE to be soaked into it! (i.e. no RAM, no SPEED, at least the hard drive is decent...) Still, I feel that (even though it sucks), we must embrace this new machine if we are to have any hope of bringing back our beloved amiga. If no one buys this machine, then that is it, the amiga is history. Major problem is: I bought my A3000 w/18 megs RAM, 500 meg HD and a G-Force 040/40 for $1200. Sure, it was used, but if I had the choice all over again: To buy it or hold out for a $3500 A4000T, I'd take the 3000 in a second. If Escom plans to bring back the Amiga, they had better do something about that price, because I can't afford close to $6000 just to get a machine that only preforms moderately better than what I have now, and I don't think that too many other people do either. But, if they don't, and they do release the Amiga at that price, all I have to say is that if ever want to see a cheaper Amiga in the future, with awsome software to support it, we'd better save our pennies and BUY THST MACHINE! Otherwise, the only amiga's well ever buy again will come from where I got mine... a newsgroup for used merchandise. And lots of people will be selling them, to finance their move to the PC... You can actually find out *exactly* how they do explosions for B5 by getting the following reference: Mojo. "Pyromania: Creating Realistic Explosions." _LightwavePRO_, Vol.1, No.9 (July 1994), p.16. You ought to be able to order this issue by calling (800)322-AVID. It's a really useful issue devoted to creating REAL WORLD effects. However, to briefly answer your question: How to create B5 fireballs? 1. Texture map an orange fractal procedural texture to a cone 2. Morph the cone to a flat disk 3. Now when you add a texture velocity (in the negative Y direction -- if you're cone tip is pointing in the Y direction), the texture will appear to move from the tip radially outward toward the base. Also, you'll want to add some transparency fall off to the texture map to have edges disappear; make sure you've deleted the base circle of the cone; play with the texture size to get the right sized clouds; use multiple "disks" to get multiple explosions. But to get all the details (and a lot of other great articles), I'd get the back issue referenced above. The following is a RANT! You have been warned! ----------------------------------------------- Hey - I'm fed up with this student pricing BS! I'm very sure that "people already in the industry" have much better things to do than to "do everything they can to prevent students [from] getting affordable copies?" For instance - they produce video tapes that let others learn LW faster. They answer questions in this newsgroup. They write articles that help other people learn from their experiences and published them in magazines like Video Toaster User and LWPro. Yeah! Its all ONE BIG CONSPIRACY to make life rough on students and the non-pro. These pros have built an almost impenetratable fortress to keep those poor students from getting experience. Gimme a break. 3D animated graphics has become SO much more accessible in the past couple of years through the efforts of companies like NewTek and DPS that it really irks me when I hear sob stories like this. From everything I have read and seen, you cannot find a more well-rounded package at a better price than LightWave. Even if you pay full list! Wake up and smell the petunias. What really stinks about all of this is the notion that students are necessarilly poor and need the assistance. Many are already being assisted by families, state subsidised universities, federal student loans and grants and scholarships. Many, like myself, get educational benefits from their employers. I'm willing to bet that the average difference in price between my automobile and the price of the average student's at the state universities in Arizona (and probably any other state as well) is more than the cost of LW and probably more than the cost of a Pentium PC that could run LW well. Check the parking lots some time. The typical student isn't driving a VW "bug" anymore. Heck - many of the bikes that students ride approach and some excede the cost of LW. Sure - we all want a better deal. I, for instance, want a better upgrade for Toaster users. But get a grip. Its not a conspiracy. I'd be willing to bet that many of these "conspiring" professionals started with little money - bought a Toaster on a tight budget, did schlock video work to get by or took significant personal risks to make a go of it and finally succede. I know someone who quit his $40+k/year job of 17 years and turned down a $65k/year job in New Jersey to pursue 3D animation on his own. I may be quitting soon as well. A lot of life is about paying costs for what you want! Students can get experience by doing the work. I don't understand the gripe if that means they have to buy the tools to learn with. Don't they have to pay for their "other" educational tools? Doesn't NewTek offer discounts for schools? Maybe the problem isn't with NewTek or these "conspiring" professionals, but in the student's choice of schools! What about the TRULY poor young people who can't even afford to go to school? Their situation is even worse. Why don't they get a really deep discount? I bet some of them want to be animators too. Well the reason is that student discounts aren't really about helping people with less. They are almost entirely a marketing tool designed to help the company by opening up markets. Truly poor people don't represent much of a market. That is why there is no "poor person" discount. You don't have to like NewTek's discount policy, but don't think the world is out to put the screws to the student either - and NewTek, BTW, is offering the best deal around in professional 3D imaging tools. They also happen to need to make a profit to continue to do so and the desktop video market is heating up while their primary platform (the Amiga) is on the skids. So, they want money for their hard work and stay in business. Go figure! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of RANT I apologize for perpetuating this thread, but I do feel a little better now for getting this off of my chest. _________________________________________________________________ Walter (Jay) Turberville |wturber@primenet.com wturber@aol.com Phoenix, AZ |http://www.primenet.com/~wturber ...........................|ftp.primenet.com/users/w/wturber From ursamino@infi.net Sat Jul 15 10:46:15 PDT 1995 Article: 7788 of comp.graphics.packages.lightwave Xref: netcom.com comp.graphics.packages.lightwave:7788 Path: netcom.com!csus.edu!csusac!charnel.ecst.csuchico.edu!psgrain!rainrgnews0!cheetah.pacinfo.com!news.uoregon.edu!gatech!howland.reston.ans.net!news.sprintlink.net!news.infi.net!usenet From: ursamino@infi.net (Joe Bell) Newsgroups: comp.graphics.packages.lightwave Subject: LightRom CD? But, I assume NewTek people read messages in this newsgroup. THis is for them. I have tried to get my flyer operating for two weeks now and have yet to see it work. I even paid a guy $100 bucks to install it. When I got it home, ..no luck. (I will deal with him later). Tech support has been as helpful as they can, given what they have to work with. (I appreciate the many call backs). I am wondering, is the price I paid for the flyer worth the headache? How reasonable is it to assume that a product will work when you purchase it? I am very frustrated and have lost money due to the fact that I have no machine to create video. Thanks, newsgroup for letting me vent. I went to the monthly Lightwave user Group at System Eyes last night. Among those there were several people that are not students but struggling with the problems of breaking into the 3D Animation world. Some I dare say have more responsibilities than most students I Know. They live in a day to day world where they support families and other such trivial tasks. They BOUGHT LW(many sacrificed that new car, vacation, etc to buy Toasters just to get lightwave) LW because thay have a vision. They sre climbing the ladder one rung at a time, and some are starting to actually recoup the cost of their investments. No one whines about or regrets buying LW. They see it for what it is and for what it offers them. Sure we all say Wow! I wish I could get a P100, some software, a PAR and such but nobody expects the tooth fairy to fly buy and drop them on us. Students are in school to learn, If their school does not have the vision I see at the users group It's not newteks fault. They offer the Schools a fair discount to establish LW and that should be enough. I'm tired of hereing about 3D Studios plan also! if it is so good then whats the problem. After all you go to school to learn 3D not LW, 3D studio, SoftImage etc. If you think learning one package will is all you need to do , then drop out now and use the money saved to buy LW, because if this is your attitude your wasting your time. Learn 3D, art, animation basics and such and be gratefull you have the chance. That's what is so great about LW the learning curve is more a downhill jog, than the mountian climbing experiance of the other packages |> End of RANT |> |> I apologize for perpetuating this thread, but I do feel a little |> better now |> for getting this off of my chest. |> ditto! -bill From des_mcpherson@cl_63smtp_gw.chinalake.navy.mil Sat Jul 15 10:48:03 PDT 1995 Article: 7801 of comp.graphics.packages.lightwave Xref: netcom.com comp.graphics.packages.lightwave:7801 Newsgroups: comp.graphics.packages.lightwave Path: netcom.com!noc.netcom.net!news.sprintlink.net!gatech!swrinde!ihnp4.ucsd.edu!newshub.nosc.mil!news!avalon.chinalake.navy.mil!usenet From: Des McPherson Subject: Win32S.386 question Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Message-ID: Sender: usenet@avalon.chinalake.navy.mil (NAWS news admin) Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Organization: NAWS, China Lake, CA Mime-Version: 1.0 Date: Wed, 12 Jul 1995 14:12:45 GMT X-Mailer: Mozilla 1.1N (Macintosh; I; 68K) X-Url: news:comp.graphics.packages.lightwave Lines: 11 I recently installed windows nt on my computer under the old windows directory and then installed lw for nt. I thought I'd let you know that we have picked up Micropace as a Distributor for U.S. and Overseas distribution of Lightwave (same as Newtek), so beginning with issue #2, those of you who have not subscribed yet can walk into your local lightwave dealer and buy it off the shelf. if you dealer doesn't have it, tell them to order several of them and stock them with their other magazines (or videos). Here at lightspeed we will take orders for issue #2 next month while distribution gets ironed out, but then we will only handle subscriptions beginning with the 3rd issue. It looks like the VTU with our ad has shipped (we're getting orders) but I haven't yet received mine. If you ever lose the number, our ad is on page one of the August issue. If you missed previous posts of Lightspeed, you can order a 6 or 12 month subscription to the Lightspeed video magazine by calling 800-764-8696 (in the U.S.) or by calling 805-726-3545. If you are a Lightwave user and are looking for tutorials, reviews and animations that deal with Lightwave, and you don't mind popping in a VHS tape to get it, and you would like more information on the videos, send me e-mail requesting so. If you are a manufacturer of products or services and would like to advertise what you have in a commercial on Lightspeed, please call 805-945-9870 for rate information. Therefore, I figured that I could just use the save transformed option to warp the texture properly onto the fireball. I was wrong! Here's what I am trying to do: _ I morph a cylinder like this: | | |_| ___ Into a fireball like this: ( ) )_( I set the cylinder to 100 percent morph, and when I render, the textures are warped properly, so I choose save transformed, and save the morphed cylinder (with the warped texture). When I clear all the objects, however, and load up the transformed object, the textures aren't properly warped anymore! I tried exiting Layout and entering again, but the same thing happened. I thought that warping textures was one of the uses of save transformed? I'm using Intel Pre-Release 4.0. Does anyone know why this isn't working for me? Or all the grouped objects would share motion or envelope. To tweak individual objects, you could just ungroup them afterwards. I almost wrote an Arexx script to do this when I had an amiga. So I'm sure that making a routine that makes copies of an envelope, or motion is not hard. I am not so sure about the shift click part. I have a feeling > I'm doing something wrong :-) Yes, you are doing something wrong. :) Here's the trick: When you have two objects, one with the texture applied normally, and have that object's geometry morphed into the shape of a second object, the texture will stretch to fit the morphed geometry. If you save that as transformed and reload it as a single object, then there is no morphed geometry -- and hence no morphed texture either. It is the act of morphing the geometry that warps the texture. Once you "freeze" the shape of the object and use it without morphing then textures will act just like they do on any other Lightwave object. Think of it this way -- by morphing object 1 100% to the shape of object 2, and saving object 1 in that transformed state, you are merely making a duplicate of object 2, and textures will act on that duplicate just as they would act on the original object 2. You really need to have both objects in the scene -- the distored one set to 100% object disolve, and the "normal" one with 100% morph into the distored shape. Then you will get the warped texture effect you are after. Some students, like myself, are merely interested in 3-D modeling. I ENJOY creating 3-D objects, scenes, and animations. This hobby isn't worth $1000, though. I also dislike getting a severely limited set of tools (affordable products) in order to TRY to create. It bothers me that a company can spend $1000 on (each copy of) Lightwave and produce a TV show, and I have to pay the same price to "mess around" and learn. I definatly think there should be a difference in price between professionals and normal folks like myself. The educational discount does this to some extent, but I admit that it leaves out non-students in the eact same situation. (And BTW, I don't even have a car.) Some thoughts: I recently upgraded to a Pentium (from my 4 year old Amiga) because the Amiga didn't fit my needs anymore as I advance in Computer Science. Not much demo software was available for the Amiga, but a lot is available for the IBM. I feel that demo software, if it's not too limited, can help someone learn a piece of software. -- ........................................................................... : Tony Schreiner : Phone: (303)936-3326 : : tschrein@holly.colostate.edu : INTP. If you want that to be a hobby bad enough, then you'll invest in it. I would love to have a hobby collecting rare and expensive coins (cars have been used to death). But, lo and behold, I can't afford them. Should I get some sort of discount off of the vendor's asking price just because of this reason? >I also dislike getting a severely limited set of tools (affordable >products) in order to TRY to create. So, hypothetically, 3D modelling and isn't even a hobby with me, I just like to dabble once in awhile. Shoud I get Lightwave for even less???? Say $5.00??? Software pricing is not based on the amount of time the user spends with it. It's based on the amount of tools and quality of the package, and what the vendor thinks they will get for the package. If a customer wants it bad enough, they'll buy it. If they don't want it bad enough, then they'll just have to do without. You also don't seem to get the fact that some companies are formed by people who have other responsibilities and cannot easily afford the $1000 either. I don't expect Snap-On tools to sell me tools at half price merely because I am not a professional mechanic. It would be nice, but I don't expect it. I spent the first half of my life in Overland Park, and I think that was the second best place I've ever lived -- the keyword here being "lived," not "worked." I lived for 13 years in Philadelphia and another 5 in South Florida. Let me tell you, nothing in my experience beats the waether/business/fun/beach environment out here. I'v lived here 12 years now and I have never once wanted to leave. As for places to live, try Mar Vista. Real close to the beach, but not close enough to get caught up in weekend beach traffic. Roller-Blade distance to Santa Monica, Venice, Playa Del Rey, and Marina Del Rey. As for paradise, there was a day in March when I bladed to the Marina. It had rained the day before, so the sky was painfully clear. The sailboats were out in force. People walking dogs. You could see from Malibu to Palos Verdes. Turn around and you could clearly see snow on the Mountains. Paradise. What's this got to do with LW? Think of all the textures you could study/photograph on a day like that! However, readers on most systems will never see your post, as the newsgroups will be removed from systems that properly process rmgroup controls. If you have any questions about the reorg or any other aspect of the newsgroup moves, let me know. If you missed the reorganization RFD's and CFV's, I'll gladly forward a copy to you so you can review the details of the comp.graphics reorganization.
